Poolside CEO Advises Against Building Foundation Models

- Most companies should focus on building applications, not foundation AI models
- Intelligence is a key commodity, comparable to electricity
- Foundation models should be a component of a product, not the product itself
- Poolside is pursuing AGI through software development
- The company plans to launch a consumer application in the future
- Poolside is working with the government and exploring challenging fields like defense
Poolside co-founder and CEO Jason Warner shared his thoughts on the development of foundation AI models at the HumanX AI conference in Las Vegas. Warner emphasized that intelligence is a crucial commodity, comparable to electricity, and that companies should prioritize building applications over foundation models.
Warner stated that if a company views foundation models as a means to raise venture capital, they should consider building a wrapper around an existing model instead. He also noted that having a foundation model as a product is not sufficient; rather, it should be a component of a larger product, especially in a competitive landscape.
Poolside's Approach
Warner mentioned that Poolside is actively pursuing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) through software development. The company plans to launch a consumer application in the future and is currently working with the government and exploring challenging fields like defense.
Poolside, founded in 2023 by Warner and Eiso Kant, has raised over $620 million in venture funding and is valued at $3 billion.
