Nico Hidalgo, a former midfielder for Spanish side Racing Santander, has passed away at the age of 32 due to lung cancer. Hidalgo played for Santander between 2018 and 2020, making 73 appearances for the team. He started his career with his hometown club Motril before joining Granada and playing for their reserve side. In August 2014, he signed for Juventus but was immediately loaned back to Granada before another loan move to Cadiz. Hidalgo joined Extramadura in 2020 but did not play due to his diagnosis with lung cancer in 2021, which led to his retirement from football. Santander described his death as an 'irreparable loss', while Granada remembered him as 'an excellent footballer and a great person'. Extramadura also expressed their condolences, saying they 'want to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends' and sending 'all our love and strength in these difficult times'.
